A Generation Refusing to Inherit Hatred: Lessons from the NEET 2026 Protests
The NEET 2026 protests reflect more than concerns about an examination—they represent a generation questioning the legacy of division and demanding fairness, transparency, and accountability.
Across regions, languages, religions, castes, and socioeconomic backgrounds, young people have come together around a common cause: the right to a fair and equitable education system. Their collective voice suggests that shared aspirations can transcend identities that have historically been used to create social divisions.
As a psychotherapist, I find this collective movement significant. It demonstrates how a shared sense of purpose can foster solidarity over polarization. Rather than carrying forward inherited narratives of hatred and “us versus them,” many young people appear to be choosing dialogue, justice, and institutional accountability.
Whether one agrees with every demand or not, the unity displayed by India’s Gen Z offers an important reminder: meaningful social change is most powerful when it is grounded in democratic participation, empathy, and a commitment to the common good.
Perhaps the most enduring legacy this generation can leave is not one of inherited hatred, but of a more united, compassionate, and accountable India.
